Plants often make their needs apparent; phototropism is a common example. Phototropism, the directional growth of plants towards a light source, occurs when hormones establish a concentration gradient with elevated levels directed toward shaded plant cells. The cells with higher levels of this hormone elongate, encouraging the plant closer to the light. As this continues the plant essentially stretches towards the source of energy that fuels its existence.
